The Main Thing
Things are picking up around here. Sunday School is in full swing. Good Book Club is going strong, with our first Thursday lecture happening last night. The Food Pantry continues to grow. The Indian Rock Society is off the ground, and our stewardship campaign will pick up in a few weeks. Our feasibility study for a capital campaign starts in earnest with a Town Hall on October 30, and that could take us in all sorts of exciting directions.
And then this Sunday is our Ministry Fair. It's the day when all our councils and many programs celebrate their work at tables in the Parish Hall. I strongly encourage you to stop by after either service to learn what's going on and how you can get more involved. There will be sign-up sheets galore, for everything from the Food Pantry to Cofee Hour. And you just might be amazed at what all we're up to.
When I consider all that's going on--all the important pieces of work happening here at St. Peter's--it gets me excited. I'm thrilled to be part of a church where the bulletin announcement page is filled to the brim.
But it brings to mind an amazing piece of wisdom I first heard several years ago from a former bishop. The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.
Read that again if you need to.
Amidst all our meetings, all our formation opportunities, all our service to people in need, we can't forget about the main thing. We have to keep the main thing the main thing. And the main thing is our life in Christ. Everything else is just details.
Everything here at St. Peter's is meant to bring the kingdom to earth as it is in heaven: to deepen your relationship with Christ, to help transform you into his disciple, to feed and nourish you in your journey, to proclaim his love to a world that needs it, to serve those whom he served.
So lets covenant with one another. Whether meeting or serving or worshiping or learning or planning...let us promise to keep the main thing the main thing. And with the main thing in focus, no matter what we're up to, we'll be right on track.
