Copenhagen

We're at the climax of the season of Advent, when we focus our lives upon acts of preparation.  It seems somewhat fitting that Advent should coincide with the global summit of national leaders in Copenhagen who are meeting to discuss a treaty related to climate change and environmental issues.  Environmental degradation is a sad reality of modern life, one that I believe causes God tremendous grief.  It is also something that requires significant change on the part of all of us--real, practical, sacrificial change.  In the same way that preparing for Christ requires repentance, so does our relationship with the Earth require reorientation in attitude and behavior.

I hope you will join with me in praying for a successful close to the Copenhagen discussions.  We simply can't afford not to change directions on greenhouse gas emissions, patterns of consumption, and exploitation of natural resources.  As humans living on a surprisingly fragile planet, we are united in our vulnerability to climate change.  But as people of God, we are called to acts of love and respect for the beautiful creation God placed in our care.
