Honoring Our Past, Embracing Our Future
Each week we gather in a magnificent space to worship and praise Almighty God. St. Peter’s by-the-Sea is blessed with this remarkable gift, built by faithful Christians over 140 years ago. Their generosity and vision provided us with a place of beauty and peace where we can come to celebrate the risen Christ. But this gift involves a sacred responsibility and trust. We who have benefited from the generosity and sacrifice of others must do whatever we can to ensure that future generations will also enter our church and find it a place of holiness and beauty.
This place we call home is in need of special care: maintenance, repairs and needed upgrades. We are calling our effort to address these items The Living Stones Campaign, based on a letter from our namesake saint to the early church. In that epistle, St. Peter encourages Christians to think of themselves as “living stones,” and to build themselves into a spiritual house where they can offer sacrifices to God. Today, we can follow Peter’s invitation and embrace this opportunity to tend not only to the historic stones of our beautiful church, but also to the spiritual house created by the faith, witness and sacrifice of all our “living stones.”
Review the information on this site to learn more about the projects making up our campaign. We hope you share our belief that this is important and necessary work, which will help us honor our past and embrace our future. It is our fervent hope that through the generosity of everyone who loves our church — both the historic and the living stones — we will continue the legacy of faithfulness at the corner of Caswell and Central Streets.
Our Prayer
Almighty God, we thank you for the gift of our beautiful and holy church, and for the generosity and sacrifice of so many Christians who passed along this treasure to us. Inspire us today in our own efforts to preserve these historic stones, that future generations would count themselves blessed. Help us also to renew the living stones of the Church, that our lives and labor will make known the glory of your kingdom. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.
